Luca Filmer: NCFE Aspiration Awards Winner 2025

When I first read about Luca Filmer’s nomination for the ‘Against All Odds’ category of the NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of admiration. At just 17 years old, this young man has already shown the kind of resilience and heart that many of us spend a lifetime trying to cultivate. His story isn’t just about overcoming challenges, it’s about turning those struggles into a force for good both for himself and the people he cares for.

As someone who believes in the power of personal growth, I think Luca’s journey is a beacon of hope for anyone facing their own battles. Let’s dive into his incredible story, alongside that of his mentor (Kelly Dace) and colleagues like Molly Uju Ukadike, and Natalie Panasiuk. Together, we’ll explore why Luca stands out as a true winner and what his success means for the future of the care sector.

Luca Filmer’s Early Setbacks and NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025 Breakthrough

Luca’s path to success was far from smooth. With an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) in place, he missed formal education during Year 11 due to inadequate support a reality faced by approximately 5.3% (up from 4.8 in 2024) of EHCP students according to a 2025 report by the Department for Education. For many, this could have been a dead end. But not for Luca. In my opinion, his refusal to let those setbacks define him is what sets him apart. Instead of succumbing to despair, he seized the opportunity presented by the Level 3 Care Apprenticeship at Clark Care Services transforming a potential disadvantage into a foundation for growth and a true launchpad

The Level 3 Care Apprenticeship, when paired with the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, provides a comprehensive and nationally recognised foundation for those aiming to build a long-term career in the health and social care sector. This learning combination equips learners with practical experience needed to deliver high-quality care and take on more senior responsibilities. Better still, government funding is available for eligible learners, making it an accessible pathway for those ready to start or advance their journey in care without breaking the bank.

Luca’s transition wasn’t solitary. He had unwavering support from his mother, his workplace mentor, and his dedicated tutor, Kelly Dace who herself is a nominee for ‘Educator of the Year’. I’m most certain that Luca’s result speaks loudly about how community and structured guidance can lift individuals over personal hurdles. His story, at this early stage, already hints at the potential for apprenticeships to serve as life-changing alternatives to traditional education routes.

With no doubts, what Luca has accomplished in such a short time is nothing short of inspiring. Despite beginning his apprenticeship with uncertainties, he quickly surpassed expectations at Clark Care Services and went ahead to win an award. How amazing is that?

One of the key aspects that particularly struck me was how he cultivated self-confidence and advocacy skills, learning to stand up for himself and the service users he supports, especially at such a young age. His tutors, senior staff, and the families of the service users he supports have provided glowing feedback a clear indicator of his burgeoning impact within the workplace.

Luca’s ability to connect with those with cognitive impairments stands out as a highlight. The Alzheimer’s Society reports that meaningful engagement can enhance the quality of life for dementia patients a benefit Luca actively delivers through his empathetic approach. He also provides IT support for his colleagues. This combination of emotional intelligence and technical proficiency, in my opinion, positions him as a figure to watch out for in the care sector proving that young individuals can lead with both compassion and competence.

Young Leader Making a Mark at NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025

NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025

At just 17, Luca’s influence at Clark Care Services is profound and far-reaching — enhancing the lives of service users and strengthening teamwork in ways that feel almost effortless but are grounded in skill and care.

One of his standout contributions is encouraging social engagement among male service users through shared interests and tailored activities. This approach, to me, reflects a deep understanding of individual needs — a skill possessed by seasoned care professionals.

He’s also created an inclusive and supportive care environment, ensuring every interaction is meaningful and respectful while also delivering digital assistance helping staff adopt new technologies to streamline the documentation process. The King’s Fund notes that digital adoption can reduce administrative burdens by up to 20% in care settings a benefit Luca’s initiative likely contributes to, portraying what the NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025 represents.

I believe this proactive approach shows a maturity beyond his years suggesting that Luca is not just participating in the workforce but actively shaping it for the better. His actions lay a foundation for lasting improvements, hinting at a legacy that will benefit his workplace for years to come. This early leadership could inspire other young apprentices to take initiative fostering a culture of innovation within the sector.

Going the Extra Mile with Acts of Compassion

I bet you wouldn’t believe that a 17 years old carer goes above and beyond organising food bank access for a vulnerable service user outside working hours. Yes, he does. A gesture that demonstrates a commitment extending beyond the call of duty. Truly commendable.

Then there was the Christmas Eve emergency when he ensured a fallen service user was safe and well — a selfless act driven by pure passion for care.

These efforts require not just skill but a genuine desire to improve others’ lives qualities I find deeply admirable. I must say that these acts of kindness are what’s needed in the care sector, proving that true success lies in the tangible, positive impact on others’ lives. Thanks to the NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025.

Future Goals and the Wider Impact of NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025

Looking ahead, Luca’s apprenticeship has ignited ambitions that stretch far beyond his current role in care which is a good thing. He aspires to become an Army Combat Medic. Given his proven caregiving abilities, calmness under pressure, and knowledge plus experience gained via apprenticeship, I’m certain this future is attainable.

In my opinion, his goal reflects a young man who sees his current position not as an endpoint, but as a stepping stone to broader service — with heart.

But Luca’s story isn’t just about personal ambition it’s a powerful reflection of what the NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025 represent. His win in the ‘Against All Odds’ category highlights how apprenticeships can uncover the potential in individuals who might otherwise be left behind.

To me, Luca’s recognition is more than a personal accolade it’s a call to action. It reminds educators, employers, and policymakers alike of the importance of investing in young people — especially those with untapped potential. As Luca continues on his path, his determination, courage, and versatility stand as an inspiration across sectors urging us to imagine a future where every young person has the chance to rise, just as he has.

The Bigger Picture: NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025 in Context

NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025

While Luca’s story takes center stage, it’s valuable to place it within the broader context of the NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025. This year’s honourees form a remarkable tapestry of dedication, leadership, and personal growth each one contributing to a sector driven by purpose.

Among them is Kelly Dace, a learning and skills tutor at Access Skills Ltd, whose innovative teaching methods and unwavering commitment have changed lives Luca’s included. Despite facing significant health challenges and travelling regularly between Liverpool and London for treatment, her resilience and passion earned her a well-deserved ‘Educator of the Year’ nomination.

Molly Uju Ukadike, a Level 5 Leader in Adult Care at Supreme Care Services, has swiftly advanced in her workplace with comprehensive training programs offered by Access Skills and leadership initiatives earning rapid promotions within months of starting her apprenticeship. Her introduction of a Telegram quiz-based learning initiative has improved staff engagement a clever, low-cost way to boost learning.

Then there’s Natalie Panasiuk from Wellesley House Ltd, another Level 5 apprentice, whose commitment spans both leadership and compassion. Balancing demanding management responsibilities with emotionally charged roles in end-of-life care, she has also raised funds for charities like Willow Wood Hospice. Her completion of over 500+ additional training hours and a Shining Star Award underscore a deep dedication to growth and service.

Together, these stories highlight the depth of talent nurtured through the NCFE Aspiration Awards. But it’s Luca’s youth coupled with the significant barriers he’s overcome that makes his recognition in the ‘Against All Odds’ category so compelling. Being nominated alongside such experienced and inspiring professionals doesn’t diminish his achievement it amplifies it.

To me, Luca’s journey reminds us that impact has no age limit. The NCFE Aspiration Awards 2025 are not just about recognising excellence they’re about uncovering it, nurturing it, and proving that success can come from any starting point. This year’s honourees collectively affirm that the future of care is in capable, passionate hands.

A Personal Reflection

As I reflect on Luca’s story, I can’t help but feel a mix of pride and hope. Pride in a young man who turned adversity into opportunity and hope that his journey will encourage others to persevere through their own challenges. In my opinion, stories like his remind us that the human spirit is capable of incredible feats when given the chance to shine. Whether it’s through his current care work or his future as a combat medic, Luca Filmer is someone to watch a true winner in every sense.
