Apprenticeship FAQs

The Apprenticeship Levy Unlocked: What Every Employer Needs to Know!

Thinking about hiring an apprentice or upskilling your existing team? The Apprenticeship Levy could be the key to unlocking funding for training. But how does it actually work? We break it down in a simple Q&A format.

What is the Apprenticeship Levy?

The Apprenticeship Levy is a government initiative designed to fund the development and delivery of apprenticeships. It helps increase the number and quality of apprenticeships while providing financial support to employers.

Who has to pay the Apprenticeship Levy?

Employers fall into two categories:

  • Levy-payers – Companies with a payroll over £3 million per year must pay the levy, regardless of whether they employ apprentices.
  • Non-levy payers – Employers with a payroll under £3 million do not have to pay the levy but can access financial support to recruit and train apprentices.
How does the Apprenticeship Levy work for levy-paying employers?

If your annual payroll exceeds £3 million:
You contribute 0.5% of your annual salary bill via PAYE.
For every £1 paid into your levy pot, you receive £1.10 to spend on apprenticeship training.
You manage apprenticeship funding through a digital account and allocate payments to government-approved training providers.
If you use up your levy, additional apprenticeships are 95% government-funded, subject to a 5% employer contribution.
A £1,000 cash incentive is available for hiring or enrolling an existing employee (aged 16-18) onto an apprenticeship.

What about non-levy-paying employers?

If your business has more than 50 employees and an annual paybill under £3 million:
You contribute just 5% towards training costs for apprentices over 18.
You receive a £1,000 cash incentive for recruiting or enrolling an existing employee (aged 16-18) onto an apprenticeship.
